I used to think the same as all these “Oh, look how sad and alone I am, because no one texts me or messages me first”. I used to think that if people didn’t want to bother putting in effort, then I wouldn’t return the effort.
Well, now I can say it’s probably the dumbest notion ever. Why should you expect things of your friends? Half of mine don’t even have time for facebook. One of them went to New Zealand. One of them is making a documentary in South America. Another is living away on campus at uni. I barely see them, and we hardly talk. But you know what? I’m happy for them. And I’m glad that they consider me as much a friend that I consider them.
When you begin to expect things of people, you set these standards and you will appear needy or possessive. So your friend didn’t have time to say good morning to you on fb first? Who cares. Life doesn’t revolve around people texting each other. And you know what? People are lazy. Your friends love you, but just because they don’t take the initiative doesn’t mean you can’t. Get the ball rolling. They’ll thank you for it one day.
